Decoding Your Roofing Warranty: Materials vs. Workmanship

Understand the two crucial parts of your roofing warranty and why both are essential for protecting your investment.

When you invest in a new roof, you're not just buying shingles—you're buying protection and peace of mind. A key part of that protection comes from your roofing warranties. But many homeowners don't fully understand what their warranties cover until they need to make a claim. Let's break down the two critical types of roofing warranties and what you should look for in each.

The Manufacturer's Warranty

The manufacturer's warranty comes from the company that made your roofing materials—companies like IKO, Owens Corning, GAF, or CertainTeed. This warranty covers defects in the materials themselves, such as shingles that crack, curl, or lose granules prematurely due to manufacturing defects, materials that don't perform as advertised, and premature failure that isn't caused by improper installation or external damage.

Manufacturer warranties vary widely in their coverage and terms. Some cover only the cost of replacement materials, while others (often called "system warranties" or "enhanced warranties") cover both materials and the labor to install them.

Standard warranties might last 20-30 years, but premium products often come with lifetime or 50-year warranties. It's important to read the fine print, as these warranties often prorate over time, meaning the coverage decreases as your roof ages.

One crucial point: manufacturer warranties typically require that their products be installed according to specific guidelines. If your contractor doesn't follow these guidelines, your warranty could be void from day one—and you might not know until you try to make a claim.

The Workmanship Warranty

While manufacturer warranties cover the materials, they don't cover installation errors. That's where your contractor's workmanship warranty comes in. This warranty protects you from problems caused by improper installation, such as leaks caused by incorrectly installed flashing, shingles that blow off due to improper nailing, issues with ventilation components, and problems with drip edge or other accessories.

Workmanship warranties vary dramatically between contractors. Some offer only a 1-year warranty, while others offer 5 years or more. Some storm chasers offer no workmanship warranty at all—and since they won't be in town next year, any warranty they offer is worthless anyway.

At River City Roofing Solutions, we provide a 5-Year Workmanship Warranty on every installation. This covers any installation-related issues that arise, and because we're a local, established company, we'll be here to honor it.

Why Both Warranties Matter

Think of your warranty protection like a safety net. If your shingles fail due to a manufacturing defect, the manufacturer's warranty has you covered. If there's a problem with how they were installed, your workmanship warranty steps in. You need both for complete protection.

Here's a scenario: imagine you develop a leak three years after your roof replacement. If the shingles are fine but the flashing was improperly sealed, that's an installation issue—not covered by the manufacturer. Without a solid workmanship warranty, you're paying for repairs out of pocket.

What to Look For

When evaluating roofing warranties, consider: How long is the workmanship warranty, and will the contractor be around to honor it? Is the manufacturer's warranty prorated or non-prorated? Does the manufacturer warranty cover labor, or just materials? Is your contractor certified by the manufacturer to offer enhanced warranty coverage?

As an IKO RoofPro certified contractor and Owens Corning Network installer, River City Roofing Solutions can offer enhanced manufacturer warranties that provide more comprehensive coverage than standard warranties. Combined with our 5-Year Workmanship Warranty, you get the complete protection your investment deserves.
