Your Essential Fall Roof Maintenance Checklist

As the leaves start to fall in Athens and across North Alabama, a little roof care can prevent big problems this winter.

As the leaves begin to change color and fall across Athens, Decatur, and North Alabama, it's time to think about preparing your roof for the colder, wetter months ahead. Fall roof maintenance is one of the most important things you can do to protect your home from winter weather damage. The relatively mild fall temperatures also make it an ideal time for any necessary repairs before winter sets in.

Here's your comprehensive fall roof maintenance checklist:

Step 1: Clean Your Gutters and Downspouts

This is perhaps the most important fall maintenance task. Gutters clogged with leaves and debris can't properly channel water away from your home. When water backs up in clogged gutters and freezes, it can cause ice dams that force water under your shingles and into your home. Overflow can also damage your fascia boards, soffit, and even your home's foundation.

Clean your gutters thoroughly, removing all leaves, twigs, and sediment. Check that downspouts are clear by running water through them. Ensure water flows freely away from your foundation. Consider installing gutter guards like LeafX if you're tired of this seasonal chore.

Step 2: Inspect Your Roof From the Ground

Walk around your home and visually inspect your roof using binoculars if needed. Look for missing, cracked, or curling shingles. Check for any visible damage or areas that look worn. Note any debris that has accumulated on the roof. Look for dark spots that could indicate algae or moss growth.

Don't attempt to climb on your roof yourself—leave that to the professionals. But a ground-level inspection can help you identify obvious problems.

Step 3: Check Flashing and Seals

Flashing is the metal material that seals the joints around chimneys, vents, skylights, and where the roof meets walls. Over time, flashing can crack, rust, or pull away. Look for signs of rust or deterioration, gaps or separation from the surface, cracked or missing caulk, and water stains on interior ceilings near these areas.

Step 4: Trim Overhanging Branches

Branches that hang over your roof pose multiple risks. They drop leaves directly onto your roof, potentially clogging gutters. In high winds or ice storms, they can break and damage your shingles. They also provide a pathway for squirrels and other pests to access your roof.

Trim back any branches that hang within 10 feet of your roof. This is also a good time to remove any dead trees that could fall on your home during a winter storm.

Step 5: Inspect Your Attic

Check your attic for signs of moisture, such as water stains on the underside of the roof deck, mold or mildew growth, damp or compressed insulation, and daylight visible through the roof boards.

Also verify that your attic has adequate ventilation and insulation. Proper ventilation helps prevent ice dams and extends the life of your roofing materials.

Step 6: Schedule a Professional Inspection
