Your Spring 2026 Roof Readiness Checklist for North Alabama

Spring 2026 will be here soon. Use this comprehensive checklist to make sure your roof is ready for the season ahead.

Spring in North Alabama is beautiful—but it's also severe weather season. The time to prepare your roof is now, before the first thunderstorm rolls through the Tennessee Valley. This checklist will help you systematically evaluate your roof's condition and address any vulnerabilities before they become expensive problems.

Exterior Roof Check

Start with a visual inspection from the ground. Walk the perimeter of your home and look up at every section of your roof. You're looking for missing, cracked, or curling shingles. Check ridge caps along the peak of the roof for damage. Look for any areas where the roof appears to sag or dip. Note any metal flashing that appears bent, rusted, or separated.

Gutter System Inspection

Your gutters are part of your roofing system. Clear out any debris that accumulated over winter. Check that all gutter sections are firmly attached and properly sloped toward downspouts. Look for rust, holes, or separated seams. Verify that downspouts extend at least four feet from your foundation. Consider adding gutter guards if you don't already have them.

Attic Inspection

Go into your attic on a sunny day and look for pinpoints of light coming through the roof—these indicate holes or gaps. Check for water stains on the rafters or decking, which suggest past or current leaks. Examine your insulation for dampness or compression. Verify that soffit vents and ridge vents are clear and allowing proper airflow.

Chimney and Vent Check

Inspect the areas around your chimney, plumbing vents, and exhaust vents. These penetration points are common leak sources. Look for cracked or missing caulk, deteriorating flashing, and any gaps between the roof surface and the penetration. Chimney caps should be intact and screening should be free of debris.

Tree and Landscape Assessment

Look at the trees near your home. Are there branches hanging over or touching your roof? These need to be trimmed back before storm season. Dead or dying trees that could fall on your home during high winds should be removed by a professional arborist. Also check for vegetation growing on or near your roof, which can trap moisture.

Pipe Boot and Sealant Check

The rubber boots around plumbing vent pipes on your roof deteriorate over time due to UV exposure. Cracked or split pipe boots are one of the most common and easily preventable causes of roof leaks. These are inexpensive to replace and can save you from significant water damage.

Documentation

Take photos of your roof's current condition from multiple angles. This documentation is valuable if you need to file an insurance claim after storm damage. Having clear "before" photos makes it much easier to demonstrate that damage occurred during a specific weather event.
